The little things

I never thought I would be so excited about being able to sleep for more than an hour or two at a time...but the slept for about 7 hours last night!

At midnight my husband and I were googling information on how to help our baby sleep more at night on our smart phones and landed on the same Dr. Sears article.

We are in day one of our sleep plan. Tonight we will begin Madeleine's bed time ritual to help ease her into sleep. Ill keep you posted on our parenting journey.

Adventures in parenting...

Prior to Madeleine's arrival I dragged my husband to what seemed like a thousand child birth, infant care education classes so that we would be prepared for the arrival of our little girl. We didn't make to the last class, because unlike any other baby in our combined family histories Madeline decided she was making her debut into the world early. Two
Weeks to the day! On Labor Day.

Our birth plan went right out the window when my blood pressure wouldn't cooperate. I'm glad our birthing class instructor had taken the time to drill into our heads that we might not have the birth we had planned for and that the real goal was to have both mom and baby survive the ordeal and be healthy at the end of delivery.

I just wish the instructor had taken the time in our breast feeding class to teach the same lesson...breast milk arrives on its own schedule and it's okay to supplement with formula while you are waiting. My hospital stay would have been greatly improved.

First lesson - be flexible.

Madeleine was a tiny baby. So tiny that my dad was too nervous to hold her...my mom fixed that right away. She was only 6lbs 7oz. All the 3 - 6 month clothes that we planned on fitting right at birth were TOO big! Along with all the diapers we had stashed away... Thank goodness the hospital sent home a stash of diapers that lasted for a few days.

Next lesson: have some newborn clothes ready!

Big Announcement!

So I'm sure that you can see its been some time since my last post...something about a healthy snack. Well my husband and I have joined a new club with a lifelong membership...the club of parenthood. On September 5, Labor Day, we welcomed our baby girl Madeleine Rose into the world. She was born in the afternoon, weighing 6lbs 7oz.

Healthy Snack...

One of my favorite snacks is bowl of buttery popcorn. Its easy to add too much butter and salt to your popcorn, especially if you have a ban on microwave popcorn at your house, like there is at mine. So Thursday I went to make myself a snack of popcorn, as the corn is popping I realize there is absolutely no butter in the house! What am I going to do? The first I thought I'd add a little bit of Olive Oil and then I remembered that I had a bottle of flax seed oil in the fridge. I added about two tablespoon of flax seed oil to my bowl of popcorn, sprinkled a little bit of Parmesan cheese and some Tony Chachere's seasoning over the popcorn. My afternoon snack was ready to go, I didn't even miss the butter.

Putting New Year's Resolutions Into Action....

Lose weight and exercise are too big new year's resolutions for a lot of people. Evidence of this can be found in the Sunday ads for every kind of exercise equipment and clothing during the month of January. My husband and I are no exception. Our exercise goals include swimming at our local pool and going on weekly cross country ski adventures. This morning was the first morning that we made it to the pool. It actually felt good to be up and about this morning after our swim at 7:00am.

During the last year and a half I did three rounds of an hcg weight loss program that my doctor had referred me to. I was quite successful in losing weight while I was participating in the program and then I would have the required breaks in between and gain weight. So this time after I've finished my weight loss round I'm going to continue nutritional counseling with Anat, my nutritionist.

Anat and I have our first meeting today. One of my goals to eat healthier, not gain weight and establish a reasonable food budget for my husband and I. One of the tools that Anat shared with me today was googling or doing a key word search with items from your pantry that you have a on hand ready to use so you don't have to make a trip to grocery. I'd never heard of doing this. I had used other sights where you could pick one ingredient but not just doing a key word search. So I tried it....with garbanzo beans, eggplant and tomatoes. All of which I have in my pantry and a crock pot recipe popped up from the cdkitchen, so Paul and I will be enjoying the for lunch or dinner tomorrow.
I'll close with a few pictures from our recent cross country ski adventures on the John Wayne Trail and at the Cabin Creek snow park.

My husband on the John Wayne Trail out of Hyak snow park on Snoqualmie Pass.
View of the mountains at Cabin Creek road trail that heads toward Lake Kachess. The pictures are a little dark because we were skiing late in the afternoon.

View of Lake Keechelus Lake from the John Wayne Trail.

Finally me on the John Wayne Trail headed back to the car.

Happy New Year!

I keep making the same resolution over and over again....when it comes to my blog. That is to post a regular basis about what's happening in my life.

A resolution that was made a few years back was to start selling my crafts. Those of you who know me...know that I love to knit, quilt and sew. I've taken a step toward being able to do this...I've opened my own etsy store. I'll post the name and a link to the store once I have some items for sale. I've also secured a blog site said etsy store to showcase the items being sold in my store.
